NORTH SQUADS TAKE DOWN THE SOUTH: BOYS NORTH DOMINATES 17-12, GIRLS NORTH WINS 17-16

BOYS (box score)
All-star games are often viewed as offensive showcases. Little defense is played while the top scoring threats put themselves in one-on-one matchups to showcase their skills.

The Boys Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic looked the part in the first quarter Saturday night, with the South leading 6-5 through 15 minutes. But early in the second quarter the offense was dampened and the exhibition turned into a competitive game in which the North proved to be the dominant team, winning, 17-12.

The North team was first on the scoreboard just 22 seconds into the game. After a pass from Josh Dionne (Duke), Andrew Hodgson (Towson) shot from about 8 yards, beating South goalie Greg Dutton ( Ohio State). Read more from the Baltimore Sun

GIRLS (box score)
For a game in which back-line muscle couldn't do much to stop attacking might, it was perhaps appropriate that an unexpected defensive stop proved the difference in Saturday's Girls Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic.

After a rare takeaway just past the draw circle by North midfielder Bre Hudgins (Brown) at Towson's Johnny Unitas Stadium, attacker Jen Devito (Yale) beat goalie Barb Black (St. Paul's) with nine seconds remaining for the last of a record 33 combined goals in a 17-16 North win.

Brooke Griffin (South River), The Baltimore Sun Player of the Year, scored a go-ahead goal with just over three minutes remaining, but the Maryland-dominated South squad surrendered a 16-15 advantage as the North scored two goals in the final 38 seconds to take its fourth win in the Classic's five-game history.
